From life-long Rabbitohs, to new recruits both young and old, Saturday’s Member Appreciation Day was a celebration of the growing diversity of the Rabbitohs Family.

Some light rain failed to deter Members from getting together at the Rabbitohs High Performance Centre, Redfern Oval, to meet the boys who had only the night before beaten the Penrith Panthers with a steely defensive effort.

Players spent the morning signing autographs and posing for photos with Members of all ages, while the younger contingent of Members enjoyed jumping castles, pass the ball competitions and a range of other activities.

But the fun wasn’t confined to Junior Members. Long-time Member Kevin Hetherington, 56, admitted to ‘feeling like a kid’ meeting his Rabbitohs heroes at Redfern.

“I feel like a school-kid all over again,” said Kevin.

“I love seeing all the guys – all my heroes. I grew up watching them at the SCG, all the Premierships, all the golden era. It doesn’t change for me. Once you’re born red and green, it never changes.”

For others, like former Rabbitohs ball-boy of the late 90’s and early 2000’s, Andrew McGregor, 26, days like Member Appreciation Day are all about giving kids a taste of the connection that he felt fortunate enough to have during his years chasing footballs for first grade.

“It’s fantastic,” said Andrew.

“You come out here, get to meet the players, get a few autographs, a few give-aways, and it’s a good way to let the kids run on the field where the players train and kick over the same posts where Reynolds slots them over all week!”

Like so many on the day, Andrew spruiked the importance of becoming a Member, pointing out Membership as not only the best way to get access to similar events, but the best way to make yourself and your passion known to the Club.

“It’s a great way to support the Club,” said Andrew.

“Instead of just turning up (to games), this way the Club knows you as well – that way you’re not just a fan in the stands, you’re a real part of it.”
