The North Sydney Bears went down to the Newcastle Knights 20-10 in round 14 of the VB NSW Cup in Newcastle, with the Knights moving in to outright second position as a result.

With the Cronulla Sharks a distant first, a whopping eight points ahead of both the Knights and the Bears leading in to the round, both sides had plenty to play for as they attempted to stay in touch with the competition leaders.

But it was the Knights who took advantage of the opportunity, with fullback Peter Matautia bagging half of his teams points to help the home-side to victory.

Tries to centre, Shaune Corrigan, and replacement forward Daniel Fepuleai, plus one conversion to Dylan Farrell wasnt enough for the Bears, the side dropping to third position after the loss.

The Bears will now take on the Windsor Wolves in round 15 of the competition.

Newcastle Knights 20 (Tries: Peter Matautia 2, Chad Redman, Dale Clacherty; Peter Matautia, A Davis goals)

North Sydney Bears 10 (Tries: Shaune Corrigan, Daniel Fepuleai; Dylan Farrell 1 goal)
