The South Sydney Rabbitohs and the Gold Coast Titans will bring the NRL back to Cairns in a blockbuster round 14 fixture to be played on Sunday 16 June at 2pm at Barlow Park.

Tickets have gone on sale to the general public today with a new capacity of 18,000 expected at the ground, with temporary grand stands being brought into the ground to enhance the viewing experience and increase the capacity at the home of Rugby League in Cairns, so that more can come and experience this exciting event on the Cairns sporting calendar.

The Rumble on the Reef will see a number of Australias, New Zealands and Englands best players take to the field including Queensland State of Origin stars Greg Inglis, Michael Crocker, Ben Teo, Ashley Harrison, Dave Taylor and Cairns-local Nate Myles. Internationals set to take the field at Barlow Park also include Sam Burgess, Issac Luke, Roy Asotasi, Jeff Lima, Greg Bird, Jamal Idris and Papua New Guineas David Mead.

Rabbitohs centre Matt King was on hand at Barlow Park today to launch the public ticket on-sale, saying the team cannot wait to get to Cairns for this match.

The boys have a few games to play before we get up here to Cairns but I know they are looking forward to it, King said in Cairns today.

The turf here at Barlow Park is outstanding and Im told that everyone in town is talking about the game coming back to Cairns.

It should be a big crowd and hopefully we can get them to cheer for the mighty Rabbitohs.

Its a great initiative bringing a game like this a regional centre like Cairns.

Cairns is a heartland area of Rugby League and we need to make sure that the people in areas like this get the chance to see the elite players more often.

We also want to get involved with the people in Cairns and the surrounding areas. Its something weve done in Perth, Coffs Harbour and Gosford in recent seasons and really does feel like a home away from home when we play there.

Were hoping to turn Cairns red and green and we want to put on a great display on the field for the people in Cairns when we play up here in June.

Were all looking forward to it and its great to be up here today to get tickets on sale for the event.

Mayor of Cairns, Cr Bob Manning, was on hand at Barlow Park to help launch ticket sales for this event, one which he believes will help to attract many visitors from the southern states.

While Cairns is full of staunch Queenslanders, we are delighted to be able to welcome Australia Rugby Leagues most traditional and historically successful club South Sydney to our home ground, Cr Manning said.

This fixture is not only an opportunity for our sport-loving locals to experience live NRL football, but also to turn on the hospitality for visiting Rugby League fans.

It will no doubt be one of the years top sporting highlights. We look forward to hosting both Souths and the Gold Coast Titans and witnessing what is sure to be a top-quality Rugby League encounter right here in Cairns.

Minister for Tourism, Major Events, Small Business and the Commonwealth Games, Jann Stuckey said the Cairns NRL clash was supported by Tourism and Events Queensland as part of a three-year agreement.

The Government is committed to supporting tourism in Cairns and the addition of the Regional Cairns Fixture to the citys major event calendar is sure to provide a boost to the local tourism industry, Ms Stuckey said.

The NRL match provides a great opportunity to showcase Tropical North Queensland as a top tourism and events destination to NRL fans, their families and friends from across the country.
