Rabbitohs prop-forward Luke Burgess will be on the sidelines for up to six months after injuring his shoulder during training this week.

Burgess had surgery today to repair the damage to the labrum and capsule in his shoulder and is likely to return to the field of play mid-season after a thorough recovery and rehabilitation program.

This is definitely a setback for Luke but he takes a highly professional approach to his football and we know he will do everything he can to return as early as he can, Rabbitohs Head Coach Michael Maguire said.

We have a good team of medical staff and trainers here at Souths and they will make sure that Biffa returns in top shape.

This development opens up an opportunity for other props to gain a spot in the team for round one and the competition for spots, including the front row, is hot at the moment.

We look forward to seeing Luke back at training and around the team shortly.

In other injury news, centre Matt King has had a slower-than-expected recovery from a broken arm suffered against the Melbourne Storm in the 2012 Qualifying Final, having had complications with an infection. King is doing everything he can to be fit for the opening round of the 2013 season.

Shaune Corrigan suffered a foot injury during pre-season training, however is on track to play in the early rounds of the season.

Dylan Farrell has been rehabilitating a back injury and is on track to be available for selection at the start of the season.
