English international George Burgess is expecting an entertaining and unpredictable Rugby League World Cup, citing eligibility rules as something that will strengthen second tier nations.

With the NRL Grand Final wrapped up for 2017, all eyes are on the next big event on the Rugby League calendar - the Rugby League World Cup – and Burges is expecting fans will witness the most competitive tournament since its inception.

“It’s going to be great, it’s going to be a great tournament,” George Burgess told Channel 7’s Emma Davenport.

“I think it’s going to be a great year for the lower nations with the new rules allowing players to go back and play for the second tier nations which is going to add a lot of strength to the competition. I think it’s going to be a great one for the fans.”

Wayne Bennett will announce his team on Monday 9 October and is likely to include the Burgess brothers in his squad. George, although pointing out his selection isn’t certain, says it’s an honour to represent your country.

“It’s always such a great honour to represent your country and it’s something that we really love doing so hopefully we get the opportunity this year,” said Burgess.

The opening match will pit the Englishman against Australia, where he’s lived since 2012, in a clash at Melbourne Rectangular Stadium.

The last clash between the two footballing giants occurred in London for the 2016 Four Nations where the Australians won 36-18. It’s a memory not too distant for George and he’ll be looking to ‘give it’ to the host side when they clash.

“I always enjoy playing down in Melbourne especially playing against Australia it’s going to be great. I can’t wait to get into camp if I get selected and hopefully we can give it to the Aussies,” laughed George.
