Rabbitohs Women In League: Em Wilson

To celebrate the NRL’s Women in League Round, Rabbitohs Media spoke to the teams Sports Scientist Intern Em Wilson to get an insight into her role at the Club.

Wilson gained her internship through her university with aspirations to become a High Performance Manager and was intrigued with the Rabbitohs due to their culture and the history of the Club.

“I’m quite interested in the culture focus of the Club and how they talk about their history and putting it into training and just the atmosphere here is so infectious,” explained Wilson.

“I’ve loved it and don’t really want to go at the end of the season.”

Wilson’s role includes looking after the GPS Data for the first grade squad and believes the NRL’s recognition of women through their Women in League Round brings attention to the behind the scenes positions women have in sport.

“I deal with all of the GPS Data for the players whether it is at training or on game day and some of the first graders who play for the Bears on the weekend, I take the units with them and do the data for them as well.

“It gives us a lot of attention because we are also doing a lot behind the scenes especially with my job dealing with all the numbers to make sure the boys are on the field at their perfect performance.

“It shows that we do have a role in the league and even with the girls that are playing sport it’s about our time to play some male dominated sports and get recognised for it.”

Involved in playing sport herself including Javelin and Oztag, Wilson also plays a role in the coaching side.

“I’m an athletics coach for my local club, I do coaching also for SCEGGS Darlinghurst where I coach Netball, Soccer and athletics for the kids as well.”
