Raiders 38 defeat Rabbitohs 10

The Canberra Raiders have dealt the South Sydney Rabbitohs a hefty blow in the nation’s capital, downing the visitors 38 points to 10 on Monday night.

The Raiders had a glut of possession against the Rabbitohs, with the red and greens unable to stop the constant raids on their line by the men from Canberra.

The night started abysmally for Souths, with Joel Monaghan scoring the first of two tries in the opening minute of play. Todd Carney converted to tke the score to six-nil.

Rabbitohs centre Beau Champion struck back for Souths in the 12th minute, running onto a short ball from John Sutton and beating two defenders to score.

This was the closest the Rabbitohs came, with first-half Raiders tries to Glen Turner, Trevor Thurling and Terry Campese extending the lead to 24-4 at the break.

It didn’t get any better in the second half with Monaghan, Adrian Purtell and Bronx Goodwin all crossing the stripe for the Raiders in the second half, leading 38-4 after 60 minutes.

The Rabbitohs scored their second try in the final minute of the match when five-eighth Dean Widders scored from a well-placed grubber kick from Beau Champion. Issac Luke converted finalising the scores at 38 points to 10.

The Rabbitohs turned over too much ball, with the Raiders receiving 47 sets-of-six with the ball. The Rabbitohs defence also was not up to its usual standard, with the Raiders scoring a number of tries from close range.

The Rabbitohs now move on to play the Melbourne Storm at Bluetongue Stadium in Gosford next Saturday at 7:30pm.
