Wesser Unveiled to Corporate Partners
23 Oct 2008
Rabbitohs Corporate Partners were the first supporters to get a glimpse of representative fullback Rhys Wesser wearing the cardinal and myrtle, when he donned the jersey at the Rabbitohs 2008 Corporate Partnership Cruise on Friday 17 October.
Wesser was joined by South Sydney junior Nathan Merritt and seven-season veteran Scott Geddes, along with Rabbitohs Football Manager John Lang on the harbour cruise which doubled as a culmination to the 2008 season and introduction for the sponsors to the opportunities available for 2009.
Geddes spoke about the strong finish to last season.
“My aim last year was to be the starting prop alongside Roy and I managed to achieve that in the second half of the season,” Geddes said.
“This year I want to be the starting prop again and play more minutes in each match and make a bigger contribution to the team.”
Merritt, who racked up 13 tries in 2008, was excited about the team the Rabbitohs had assembled for 2009 and challenges that lie ahead.
“We didn’t have a great year last year but I know that 2009 will be much better,” Merritt said.
“We’re definitely aiming to make the top eight and I think if we can keep everyone on the field throughout the season then we should be in for a very good year.
“I’m looking forward to playing with some of the new guys like Rhys and Colin Best, and hopefully scoring some more tries.”
“I think we can expect 51 tries from the three players we have here tonight,” Mr Lang said to the 400-strong crowd.
“25 from Rhysy, 25 from Nathan, and one from Scotty Geddes. No pressure Scotty!”
Mr Lang spoke about the spirit at the Club and how that compares to other Clubs he’s worked at.
“The feeling around the Club is really electric,” he explained.
“It’s not just the players and the coaches, but the office staff and the Members that you meet, the corporate partners that you speak to and the supporters that get out to the games.
“There’s a really positive feeling running through the Club and in my experience that’s where it all starts, getting everyone moving in the one direction and believing that this Club can be great again.
“I remember I used to dislike coaching against Souths because their fans were so passionate and got behind their team so strongly. It’s great to be on their team now.”
Wesser spoke about his pride and anticipation in playing for the Rabbitohs.
“I’ve pulled on the maroon jersey for Queensland and the pride I felt in representing my state was enormous. I’m sure the feeling will be similar when I pull on the red and green jersey and represent South Sydney,” Wesser gleamed.
“It’s great to see we have so much corporate support and everyone knows the Rabbitohs have a strong supporter base, so I can’t wait to get out there and play in front of everyone.”
The corporate partners didn’t have to wait long to see Wesser in the cardinal and myrtle, with John Lang presenting his former premiership-winning fullback with his first Rabbitohs jersey, complete with a number one emblazoned on the back.
Wesser put the jersey on quicker than it would take him to scoot the length of the field to score a try, much to the delight of the 400 people in attendance.
