Tamanika Excited About Debut

Rabbitohs winger John Tamanika is excited about his NRL debut against the North Queensland Cowboys this Sunday afternoon, however he knows this isn't a fairytale ride into a regular NRL spot.

Tamanika, 22, was the equal-leading try scorer in the Queensland Cup last season, playing with Rabbitohs feeder Club Easts Tigers. Sunday's game will be Tamanika's first appearance in a Rabbitohs jersey in the competition proper, having represented South Sydney in Jacksonville Florida against the Leeds Rhinos, and in the Club's trial match against the Sharks at Bluetongue Stadium.

Tamanika says he still has a few hurdles to overcome before making his first grade debut against the Cowboys.

“I need to get through training first!” Tamanika said at Rabbitohs training at Erskineville Oval.

“I’m taking things day-by-day and don’t want to think about things too much.

‘I’ve learned over the past few years playing first grade in the Queensland Cup that you shouldn’t play the game in your head before you get out on the field."

Tamanika said it was a moment of elation when Taylor told him he was playing in the NRL.

“I was actually taking a quick nap and he rang me and told me I’m playing first grade.

"I walked outside to take a couple of deep breaths, and then I came back inside and screamed the house down.

"It was very exciting and I can’t wait to play in front of the Rabbitohs Members and supporters.”
