North Sydney Bears vs Newtown Jets on Saturday

At 100 years, 2 months and 12 days old the North Sydney Club finds itself on top of the table and undefeated and about to face currently it’s greatest rival – the Newtown Jets.

On Saturday the 19th of April the Bears will face the Jets in the first leg of the Frank Hyde Shield. In the weekend of Rugby Leagues’ Heritage round this will be a fitting tribute to 2 of Australia’s oldest sporting institutions. North Sydney vs Newtown will be preceded at 4:30 p.m. by a tribute to the late & great Frank Hyde.

Also in the spirit of the Leagues’ Heritage Round the Bears NSW Cup team will play in a replica strip of the jersey worn by the North Sydney Club in the 1943 Grand Final. Contested between the Newtown and Norths this was the Frank Hyde lead North Sydney side that attracted record crowds everywhere it played. These jerseys will then be auctioned off to the fans during the remaining season.

This event will also be a reunion of sorts with many ex first grade Bears expected to attend and all are invited back to the North Sydney Bowling Club for post game briefing following the conclusion of the NSW Cup.

A ball relay from Birchgrove Oval to the SCG to celebrate 100 years since the first ever Australian Rugby League match held between South Sydney and North Sydney will be held on Sunday. Places in this relay are open to North Sydney Fans and anyone interested are invited to email the Club with their details to info@northsydneybears.com.au. Fans selected for the North Sydney leg of the relay will need to be at Birchgrove Oval by 10:30 am and will be completed by 12:30 pm. Free entry and transport will be available to the SCG in time for the Souths V Wests Tigers match taking place that afternoon.
